Shop Gentei is back with another hot item, a 1992 Scotty B mix, dubbed from an original cassette copy, onto deadstock vintage tapes! It's weird to think about how casettes were THE SHIT back in the day, and how old they seem now. I sill have a tape deck that I can use, but how many people still do? A lot of people today have NEVER used tapes, and it must seem like a relic to them. To anyone that was into dance music in the 90's however, the mixtape was often the only source for tons of great DJ mixes and live sets, and 'only' copies of rare tapes were treated like gold. It is a real concern that a lot of this history will be lost as tape machines get older and older, and the magnetic strip degrades. This is a huge problem in general for old media, film, video tapes, computer disks, really anything analog - and it is a really fun idea to make this mix something that can't just be listened to anywhere.

Shop Gentei party yesterday was hott - and it was mayhem til' they kicked us out at 2 - Scottie B rocked the place with his closing set. Haven't seen him DJ in a while, and it was pretty much perfectly selected and played. Club, to 80's, to a few house tracks on the ends. It's not always easy to keep the crowd that into it at 1:30am on a Sunday!
Gentei has some hot items in the shop for this fall - the selection of brands is crazy, and a lot of that stuff you won't find anywhere else in the states - including NYC. Tokyo style retail straight up, in Baltimore: super clean, and perfectly displayed. I've been to a lot of shops, in a lot of places, and this is one of the best out there...Has to be said!
I also decided to throw together a quick tape, really cuz I want to listen to these tracks on the ipod this week. I pretty much just went for it, so don't mind a few stray beats. Since I played Ministry's 'Halloween' in the set the other night, here are some other tracks to take you back to the days of Playschool (above 'The Rage' metal bar downtown on Calvert St), Meltdown, and the the all ages Sunday 'Progressive' nights in 90-92. They also did this at O'dells, but I don't remember what night. O'dells was the shit, too bad I couldn't get there too much before it closed...
